Kandari nomads coming down from Lake Shiva. Afghanistan, August 1965 From the Wilfred Thesiger Collection at The Pitt Rivers Museum, University of OxfordOn the verge of starting a new temporary nomadic lifestyle, I’m pondering what it is to be nomadic. Can I really be a nomad for only 4 months? Surely that’s not long enough to do a full circuit of all my food sources and sacred sites.

But, am I about to become a temporary nomad, or have I been a nomad for the last seven and a half years already? Maybe I have to admit that I’m living a nomadic lifestyle – eight years is just a single circuit in the the new nomadism.
